Year 2 - Butterflies and Ladybirds

Dear Parents/Carers

We hope that you all had a wonderful summer and are just as excited to start the new school year as we are. Below, we have attached some important information and dates for your convenience. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Looking forward to a great first term!

  • Mr. Grier, Miss Kipps, and Mrs. Osmenaj

Physical Education

This year, pupils will be fortunate enough to receive lessons led by specialist teachers. These lessons include Physical Education which will happen twice a week. P.E lessons are as follows:

Butterflies – Tuesday and Wednesday

Ladybirds – Tuesday and Thursday

We will expect children to have the correct P.E kits in school at all times. Information about our new P.E kit can be found on the school website. (www.cooksspinneyprimary.com)

Reading Books

Reading books will be sent home every day. We encourage that you read with your child for at least 20 minutes a day and that you record this in the book given to you. We request that the reading diary and reading book to be brought in to school every day so as we can monitor the children through guided reading and continue to set new targets.

Spellings and Homework

Children will be given a list of spellings every Tuesday. They will need to learn these spellings for a test the following Monday. Times tables and weekly pieces of homework will also be sent home. All of these will be sent in your child’s homework book, which should be brought into school each Monday to be marked before receiving new homework on Tuesday.

In Year 2, students are required to complete Statutory Assessments (SATS). These will take place in the Summer Term. We ask that parents remain discreet when discussing SATS and be careful not to pressure students with these assessments. If you have any questions, please talk to a member of the Year 2 staff.

During the first half-term, students will be focusing on recognizing the value of digits (hundreds, tens, units) and addition and subtraction (using a variety of strategies) including column method. We ask that parents complete the weekly homework with an eye in improving these skills.

In November, students will focus on using skills and strategies to complete problems involving division, multiplication, and money.

Students will begin the school year with a focus on identifying and creating sentences (using capital letters and full-stops) and work on expanding these sentences with adjectives and adverbs. Students are also to learn and identify different types of sentences and punctuation.

This half-term, students will be learning about the history of toys, and the various materials used to create them. As such, we ask that all students complete a homework project to enhance their learning and understanding.

Students are to create a puppet using materials of their choosing. These are to be handed in by Monday October 15th 2018. The will be use these to create a perform their own puppet shows on Wednesday October 17th.

Here at Cooks Spinney we encourage all students to make healthy choices, and promote healthy learning and education. As such, students are provided a free healthy school snack every day for play time (10:15 a.m to 10:30 a.m). Students may bring in their own snacks, so long as it is a healthy substitute (e.g fruit, vegetables, fruit-based granola bars etc.)

This also means that fizzy drinks or sugary juices are not permitted. Only water should be brought to school in your child’s bottle.

As part of our Year 2 Enriched Curriculum students will be given the opportunity to go on a variety of trips in our community. These dates will be provided throughout the year.
