Year 2 - Butterflies and Ladybirds

Spring Term 2024

We would like to give you are warm welcome back after the Winter Break. This term we will be learning the following:

Writing

Year 2 will be continuing to follow the Read, Write, Inc. programme. During this term, your child will be placed into similar reading attainment groups, where they will be able to read a story fluently and complete writing tasks based on what they have read. Your child will be bringing home 3 books each week (storybook, book bag book and a library book). Please ensure your child reads these books with you and returns them by the date written in their reading records. Additionally, our English class text will be Little People, BIG DREAMS Treasury in Spring 1 and The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton in Spring 2.

Maths

The initial focus for Maths this half term will be shape. The children will be identifying 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.  From here, they will move onto money. They will start by identifying coins and notes and then counting in pounds and pence. Using this understanding they will compare amounts and calculate change. Finally, we will start to focus on multiplication and division.  The children will be able to recognise and make equal groups, start to use the multiplication symbol and create arrays.

Throughout the year, in tandem with their core Maths lessons, the children will be following a Mastering Number programme. The aim of this programme is to cement the children’s deep knowledge and understanding of numbers and how they are linked.

Science

We will be focusing on Living Things and Their Habitats as our science topic this term. They will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive. They will be able to identify a variety of plants and animals and the habitats and microhabitats in which they live. Finally, they will describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

Religious Education

RE gives our pupils valuable insights into the diverse beliefs and opinions held by people today and in the past. It helps with their personal development and supports an understanding of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural questions that will surface again and again in their lives.

In Spring 1 we are focussing on the religion of Islam and for Spring 2 we will be looking at Hinduism.

History

Studying history is important because it allows our pupils to understand the past, which in turn allows them to understand our present. If we want to know how and why our world is the way it is today, we have to look to history for answers.

In Spring 1, we will be studying the queens, Elizabeth I and Victoria through our topic of Marvellous Monarchs. We will focus on who they were as individuals, the trials and tribulations of their lives and the lasting impacts they had during their reigns and today’s society.

Geography

Studying geography creates global citizens. Pupils better understand the inter-dependence of our world and how we are connected through location, place, movement, region, and human-environment. All of these aspects are things pupils need to understand in our global society.

In Spring 2, our topic is Rio de Janeiro.  The children will take a journey to South America and discover the people and the amazing fauna and flora that Rio has to offer. The will compare and contrast the lives of people who live in Brazil to those in the UK and Harlow and experience the delights of Rio Carnival.

Music

In musiclearning to sing Hands, Feet, Heart in Spring 1 and I Wanna Play in a Band in Spring 2.

PE

PE will be on occur on a Monday and Wednesday for Ladybirds and a Wednesday and Thursday for Butterflies. This term they will be working on fitness, athletics, dance and ball skills in Spring 1 and invasion games, yoga and dance in Spring 2.

Art

Art will be taught by Miss Clark on a Monday for Butterflies and Tuesday Ladybirds. The Spring 1 theme is Be an Architect, looking at the artists Zaha Hadid and Hundertwasser. For Spring 2, the theme is Expressive Painting, looking at the artists Van Gogh and Cezanne.

Homework

Project: Each half term the children can pick an activity which is based on the curriculum being taught that half term.

Maths: This will be set each Tuesday via Class Dojo and is to be completed in their homework books and to be returned the following Monday.

They will have access to Times Tables Rock Stars where they can practise their time tables in an interactive and fun way.

Reading: We encourage that children read every day at home and this is to be recorded in their reading records.

Best wishes

Miss Brooks, Mrs Parker-McGee and Mrs Osmenaj.
