Year 5 - Owls and Foxes
Spring Term (1) 2024
We would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope you have all had a lovely break. Please note the following information needed to make this term as successful as possible:
Curriculum
This half term our topic is Climate Change. This is a Geography-based topic and we will be focusing on the what causes climate change, the effects of climate change, how we can slow it down and the impact Greta Thunberg has on raising the world populations awareness on the matter.
For R.E., our topic is Peace. We will be identifying what is peace and how it is viewed across religions. Additionally, we will explore the United Nations.
In Science this half term, we will be focusing on Properties and Changes of Materials. This will include carrying out different investigations to identify conductors, insulators, soluble and insoluble materials. Also, we will investigate how to separate mixtures.
For Computing, we will be focusing on Computing Systems and Networks. This will involve learning about how information is shared from one device to another.
In Music, we will be learning the song Make You Feel My Love performed by Bob Dylan and covered in a pop-ballad by Adele.
Finally, for PSHE, we will be concentrating on Health and Wellbeing. We will be learning about the importance of basic first aid, how to treat common injuries and how to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency.
P.E.
Year 5 P.E. days for Foxes are on Mondays & Thursdays and Owls are on Mondays and Thursdays. Your child must come to school in their P.E. kit on these days. Failure to have it is likely to result in them not being able to participate in the lesson. In addition, children will not be able to participate if they do not have the correct P.E. kit. Please see the school website for more information on the P.E. kit requirements. If your child has their ears pierced, they will be required to either take out the earrings or cover them with tape for the lesson. Please remember Cooks Spinney only allows small stud earrings in school.
Homework
This year our homework will set via Class Dojo. This will involve weekly spellings, reading comprehension activities and maths homework, which will be set on a Tuesday. Children must bring in their homework books every Monday. An additional Homework Challenge will be set weekly for children who would like to complete it. If you require a paper copy of the homework, please ask your class teacher for one.
We recommended children to continue to practice their times tables using TTRS and reading at home, which must be recorded in their reading records. Please bring in reading records in every Monday.
