This evening I saw at Cooks Spinney School a fantastic school newspaper entirely written by the children. I thought, yes! That's just what we mean when we say schools can spend a %ge of their time being publishing and performing houses.

Year 6 - Eagles, Sparrowhawks and Wolves

Spring 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! We hope you had an enjoyable break. We are looking forward to working with your children this term. This page is designed to provide you with the information needed to make the year as successful as possible.

Curriculum

This half term our Enriched Curriculum Topic is Japan. The children will be focussing on different aspects of the country and learning about the culture. In English they will be learning how to analyse settings, use clues to infer and draw conclusions about characters, places and events as well as writing across a range of genres. This term in Maths they will be looking at arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning style questions in preparation for their SATs.

P.E.

Year 6 P.E. days this year will be:

Wolves: Mondays and Wednesdays

Eagles: Mondays and Wednesdays.

Sparrowhawks: Mondays and Tuesdays

Your child must have their P.E. kit on these days. Failure to have it is likely to result in them not being able to participate in the lesson. In addition, children will not be able to participate if they do not have the correct P.E. kit. Please see the school website for more information on the P.E. kit requirements. If your child has their ears pierced, they will be required to either take out the earrings or cover them with tape for the lesson. Please remember Cooks Spinney only allows small stud earrings in school.

Homework and Spellings

Homework and spellings will be given out on Friday’s and will be due in the following Friday. This can be found on Mathletics and Reading Eggs. Please remember that there will be a homework club Friday after school, please sign up for this at the office.  Spellings must not only be practised, but also written into full sentences. If your child does not know the meaning of the word and is unable to find a definition, please make sure they speak to a member of the Year 6 team about the meaning.

Reading

Reading is an integral part of Year 6.This year we are having a big push to promote a love of reading across the school. It is very important that you ensure your children are reading on a daily basis, and, where possible, ask them questions about what they have read to support their comprehension.

If you have any questions or concerns at any point throughout the year, please speak to either your child’s class teacher or another member of the Year 6 Team.

Yours faithfully,

Miss Pearce, Mrs Dackombe, Miss Farrell, Mrs Povey.
