Our excellent year 6 Netball team worked tirelessly till the final whistle and only lost out narrowly by a 1-0 defeat in our last game of the day. Their team spirit and never say die attitude was amazing. So proud of them. https://t.co/sGJOlESydb

Reception - Sprites and Unicorns

Summer 2019

Welcome back for the Summer term!

Our topic for this term is Animals and Mini beasts! We have lots of exciting new experiences planned for the children and the learning will be broken down into five different categories- Pets, farm animals, wild animals, under the sea and mini beasts.

In May we are planning to visit Paradise Wildlife Park! The children will be able to get up close to all the animals they have been reading about in books such as lions, cheetahs, monkeys and penguins.

Understanding the World

We will look closely at the features and characteristics of different animals and go exploring outdoors on a bug hunt. We will also learn about different habitats and make comparisons about where animals live. Lastly, we look at life cycles and observe the changes that take place over time as a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly for example.

Maths

In Maths the children will be solving lots of practical problems and playing games that encourage the children to be naturally mathematical, deepening their understanding of number such as snakes and ladders and dominoes. By the end of the year the children should be able to-

Count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they will add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They will also solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

 Literacy

In Literacy, we will be reading lots of stories such as Dear Zoo, What the ladybird heard, The Tiger Who came to tea and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will also look at non-fiction books to help us learn lots of interesting facts. We will use our writing skills in a variety of ways; writing fact files about our pets, short stories and labelling the parts of an insect for example. By the end of the year children should be able to-

Use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They will also write some irregular common words. Children will write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words will be spelt correctly and others will be phonetically plausible.

To finish off the year, our final topic will be "Summer". We will be spending lots of time outdoors and will also have some structured learning time indoors ready for year 1.

During this time, we will be doing several transition visits to the children’s new class and they will get to know their new teacher.

Please ensure you are checking our weekly newsletter for upcoming dates and information.
