Year 1 - Squirrels and Frogs

Autumn 2019

Welcome to Year One!

We are very excited for the year ahead! We hope that the children have great fun this year and make giant leaps in their learning.

Please find some useful information below that should answer some questions you may have.

Reading:

Please read with your child at least 4 times a week. It is an excellent way to challenge the children and extend their phonic knowledge.  Please use the Reading Record to comment on your child’s reading and for any queries. We will be hearing them read during Guided Reading as well as individual sessions. It is important that the children bring their reading books to school every day.

Phonics:

As you may be aware, children will be assessed on their phonic knowledge in June. In preparation for this, we will be sending home high frequency words and introducing them to Phase 5 sounds. If you need any support with phonics, please do not hesitate to contact the Year 1 team!

P.E.:

Squirrels Class have P.E. each Tuesday and Thursday, and Frogs Class have P.E on Mondays and Thursdays. We suggest they leave their P.E. kits in school. They will be going outside throughout the year so please provide them with black tracksuit bottoms and a jumper.

In Maths, we are focusing on Place Value to 20. In Literacy, we will be developing the children’s phonic knowledge and sentence writing. We will be focusing on History and R.E this term. In Science, we are focusing on the Human Body and Seasonal Changes.

Thank you for all your support and we look forward to a fantastic year together!

The Year 1 team.
