Sprites and Unicorns enjoyed making and decorating some poppies for Remembrance Day. Both classes made a giant poppy and the children also made one of their own to mark 100 years since the end of WW1. https://t.co/mR0jDZ0cId

Year 1 - Squirrels and Frogs

Welcome to Year One!

We are very excited for the year ahead! We hope that the children have great fun this year and make giant leaps in their learning.

Please find some useful information below that should answer some questions you may have.

Reading:

Please read with your child at least 4 times a week. It is an excellent way to challenge the children and extend their phonic knowledge.  Please use the Reading Record to comment on your child’s reading and for any queries. We will be hearing them read during Guided Reading as well as individual sessions. It is important that the children bring their reading books to school every day.

Homework:

Homework is compulsory in Year 1. It will be handed out on Wednesdays and will be collected in any time before or on the following Monday. The work will usually be Maths, English and/or will be linked to their classroom learning. Please feel free to write a note to the teacher in the book if your child has had any particular problems or successes!

Spellings:

The Spelling Book will also come home on Wednesday and the children will be tested the following week. Again, it is important that these books come into school each Wednesday.

P.E.:

Squirrels Class have P.E. each Wednesday and Thursday, and Frogs Class have P.E on Mondays and Wednesdays. We suggest they leave their P.E. kits in school. They will be going outside throughout the year so we suggest they have tracksuit bottoms and a jumper in their kit bags.

In Maths, we are focusing on Place Value to 20. In Literacy, we will be developing the children’s phonic knowledge and sentence writing. Our topic this term is Superheroes and Festival Fun. We will be linking our learning to these themes. In Science, we are focusing on the Human Body and Seasonal Changes.

Thank you for all your support and we look forward to a fantastic year together!
